Link additional administrators through the LAN

There are two cases when you will need to use the ‘Browse’ function to establish a link to an existing ThinkWave Administrator Database.

  • »  If you want to open the ThinkWave Administrator Datafile from an additional computer, located on the same local area network (LAN) as the main database.
  • »  If you login to the same computer where the Administrator Database is located, but with a different user account than the one that was used to create the Administrator Database.

The ‘Browse’ function needs to be performed one time, to establish a link to the database. After a link has been successfully established, then subsequently, you will need to use the ‘Open’ function to work with the database.

Open Database Screen

When you start ThinkWave Administrator, in the ‘Open database’ screen, click the ‘Browse’ button.

Select SQL Server

The Select SQL Server screen is used to choose the computer that hosts the SQL Server where the target database is located.

  • »  If you are linking to a computer on the Local Area Network, use the pull-down list to select the name of that computer.
  • »  If you are linking to a database that is hosted on the computer you’re working on, then select the first name on the list.
  • »  Click Next

If you cannot find a particular SQL server, you can try the following:

  • »  If the SQL on your local computer is not showing, then:
  • »  Restart your computer.
  • »  If this does not help, then use the ‘Service Manager’ in Start|Programs|Startup to manually start the SQL server.
  • »  If the computer name was changed, then you may need to reinstall MSDE.
  • »  If you cannot find the Service Manager, you may need to reinstall MSDE. Check the Microsoft website for more details.
  • »  If you cannot find a particular server on the Local Area Network, then:
  • »  Make sure that you are logged into the network properly. Check that you are logged into the correct domain on the network.
  • »  Ensure that computer you are connecting to is on, and is logged into the local area network.
  • »  Ensure that the SQL Server you are trying to connect to is Started. Use Service Manager on target computer to Start the server.
  • »  Ensure that TCP/IP is properly configured.
  • »  You can also try to manually type in the local IP address of the computer containing the SQL Server.

Enter ThinkWave ID

After you have selected the correct SQL Server, enter a ThinkWave ID that is associated with the target database. The ThinkWave ID can be the one that was used to create the target database. You can also enter a ThinkWave ID that is a valid ‘User’ of the target database {see section relating to creating additional Users}.

Troubleshooting:

In some network configurations, you may get an ‘Invalid User’ – even when you are entering a valid ThinkWave ID. A workaround for these cases is to click ‘Back’ to access the ‘Select SQL Server’ screen. Instead of selecting the name of the SQL Server from the pull-down list, manually type in the local IP Address of server you are trying to connect to. In most cases, the ThinkWave ID will be properly recognized.

Select School Database

When your ThinkWave ID has been authenticated, a list of databases that the ThinkWave ID is valid for, appears in the pull-down list. Select the target database from this list, and click Next.

Completed

Click Finish to complete the linking process.

The next time you start ThinkWave Administrator, the link you just created will be visible in the Open Database screen. You will not have to repeat the linking process. Just select the needed database, and click ‘Open’.
