Weekly Report

from:Abbott, Angela

to:All Students

I am available to students and parents every morning from 7:45 am.

On Tuesday the US history units went to the UW Memorial and College libraries for an orientation and to learn how to do scholarly research using their amazing facilities and the licensed web. They had 35 minutes at the end to start finding potential resources for an upcoming essay (November). It was a great learning experience and the students received a lot of compliments for their decorum, interest and enthusiasm.

All units reviewed their political packets for an upcoming test, they have been told to pace their learning, as there is a lot of content to learn. I am available if any student needs help in organizing their time and materials. The Euros had their Geography quiz on Thursday.

I think it is important that students watch the first Presidential  and only Vice-Presidential debates on the evenings of the 3rd and 11th October respectively. The extra time needed will be built into those evenings, vis-a-vis homework from other subjects.

All 7/8 students will be participating in an all school 2012 Election TGIF. I will be asking the students what format they want their 10-15min. spot to take. If there are any creatively minded parents out there that want to share ideas and help in the production, I would love to hear from you.

Have a lovely w/end :)

Weekly Report

to:All Students

I am available every morning from 7:40- 8:15 am for student consultation.

All "information" handouts will be available on line shortly. You can read the hard copies kept in your child's History binder.

All units completed their review and discussion of the Democratic National Convention. They then started profining four presidential, two vice-presidential, and the WI senate candidates. We did take some time out of the national scene to discuss the emerging situation in Bengazi, Libya and Cairo, Egypt. and their impact on the presidential election. I reminded the students that they should be more aware of what is going on in the news and would appreciate it if parents would encourage them to do so.

All students were given a talk on plagiarism by Gabrielle during their R&W period. The handouts they recieved are in their history binders in the information section.

The Euro class have completed their examination of the geography of Europe and we are in the process of reviewing their politics packets.

The US units are in the process of learning about Dante, Samuel Johnson and Martin Niehmoller, the authors of three famous quotes they had written about.

From next week, homework that is not complete or done at all will be recorded that way, thereby affecting their quarterly grade. Students are expected to complete all their work.

Have a great w/end :)

Both US classes worked on reaquainting themselves with global geography!! We are now beginning an overview of geographic terminology.

The Euros are working on the geography of Europe.

All three units have started researching a politics packet. Their homework during the week was to tune into the Democratic National Convention each of the three nights it was on and take notes. We have begun to discuss themes and content of some speeches and will complete the discussion on Monday. A heads up for October, I will be asking all students to listen to the Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates. Prior to the debates students will have researched some of the major issues. More to follow!

Have a great w/end :)

It has been a delight to meet the new 7/8 students, and welcome back the returning students. They have a challenging and rewarding year ahead.

This week I talked about how my classroom is organized and how I operate. They have been thrown into the study of Political Science this week by monitoring the Republican Party's convention in Tampa. Next week it is the Democratic party's turn. For the next two months students will be profiling candidates for the Presidency, Congress and Governorships. They will also be examining the major issues being discussed in this election cycle. The result will be a lot of "informed " debate :)

Have a great Labour day w/end :)
