Studying for math cumulative test

from:Nelson, Ms.

to:Math 8 - Algebra 1, A

Students will have a two-day cumulative test on Monday and Tuesday, June 4th and 5th, on chapters 7-10.  They have review packets for each chapter.  Part of these have been completed in class and for homework.  There are extra problems for them to work on in preparation for the test.  There are also review problems at the end of each chapter in the text, and the chapter tests at the end of each chapter.

Biome Project Update - May 22

from:Nelson, Ms.

to:Science 6, B

Just to bring to your attention that the Biome Field Guide Project is due on June 1st, which is not that far away. On Thursday we have checkpoint 4, which includes pages 3-6.  This is the food web, and water, nitrogen and carbon cycle.  We have instructed the students to come up with their OWN diagrams for these four topics, based on what they know about their biome.  They can use ones that they have found as guides, and should reference these guides, but they should make these biome-specific.  They can either draw these free-hand (points will not be taken off for less than beautiful artwork, what matters is including the important parts of each cycle) or they can construct their own by importing various images into their computer program and drawing arrows among them.  They have samples of the nutrient cycles in their notes and in their textbook.  We will review this further on Thursday, but as this seems to be the most challenging part of the project, I wanted to explain it fully.

This week we have been dissecting owl pellets, will be working on our project on Thursday and starting Chapter 3 on Friday.

Math Week of May 21

from:Nelson, Ms.

to:Math 8 - Algebra 1, A

Students were given their Chapter 9 tests back on Monday.  While this was our hardest chapter, they still need to do a better job preparing for tests.  This was given over two days and they were allowed to study inbetween those days for the test.  Because it was such difficult material, I have allowed them to make test corrections and turn them in for extra points on the test.  These are due on Wednesday, May 23.

We will be working on Chapter 10 (sections 1, 2, 3) this week, which returns us to graphing, but this time we are graphing polynomials = parabolas!

We will be having a cumulative end-of-the-year test on recent chapters, tentatively scheduled for June 8.

This week we spent Monday preparing for our "Quest" on chapter 2, Tuesday taking the Quest and Wednesday working on our biome projects.  Our project check #3 was on Wednesday.  For the next four days we are going to be completing an owl pellet lab.  Thursday and Friday will be spent preparing for this special lab, learning about barn owls and what we might find in the pellets.  Monday and Wednesday (Tuesday art field trip) will be dissecting the owl pellets!

Next Thursday (5/24)  will be our next Project day and Project Check #4.

Week of February 20th

from:Nelson, Ms.

to:Science 6, B

We have started the Cardiovascular System!  Students are learning about the heart, blood vessels and blood this week.  We have taken our own resting and exercise pulses, worked on heart diagrams, found current events relating to the material, and been working through a powerpoint on this system.

Feb. 20, 2012

Week of February 20th

from:Nelson, Ms.

to:Math 8 - Algebra 1, A

This week we have been working on Chapter 7.  On Thursday we have a quiz on 7.1 through 7.3.  We will finish section 7.4 by Friday.  This chapter is about solving systems of equations, which means finding the solution of two linear equations - where those two lines meet, and the coordinates of that point.  7.1 used graphing to find the solution, 7.2 used substitution and 7.3 used elimination by addition and subtraction.   Some of the students have grasped the concepts successfully and some are rather confused by it.  They understood last Friday and then the long weekend did not do us any favors!  If you have a moment to look over the material with them this coming weekend, it would be helpful.  The tutorials at the beginning of each section would be a great place to start, and then follow with a practice problem.

We will have some sort of assessment next week, before vacation.  I doubt it will be on the entire chapter.
