Wednesday Chatter

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

Thank you for returning the permission slips so quickly. I have them all turned in. So far I have two moms and one dad who are attending. If you are planning on going, please let me know so I can reserve your spot at Mainstay.

Your child did a great job on the book report for Song of the Brook. I hope you enjoy reading their efforts on this when it comes home Monday.

There is a math test on Friday which will cover story problems. Your child needs to know units of measurement: pounds in a ton, ounces in a pound, feet in a mile, etc. (We have flash cards on these measurements most days.) This test also covers division, multiplication, subtraction, and addition. Averaging and measurement equations are also on this test.

This Weekend

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

Hello Parents and Students,

Our homework over the weekend is to read Song of the Brook chapters 14 and 15. We will begin writing our book report next week in class. Please make sure you not only read the words, but understand: what the story is talking about (plot), who the main characters are, and the various settings of this story. The book report on Song of the Brook is due Wednesday, September 26.

We also are responsible to define some science words over the weekend to be handed in on Monday: annual rings, evergreen, conifer, pollination.

Our spelling words for next week are concentrating on doubling the final consonant before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel: absence, excitement, committee, exactly, forgotten, awkward, miniature, caution, Wednesday, error, New Hampshire NH, Virginia VA, lawyer, vacuum, planning, disappearance, psalm, controlled, naturally, winning, children, daughter, seldom

Vocabulary words are:

rejoice = to be filled with joy, pleasure, or satisfaction

shrewd = clever

sanitary = clean

recommend = to suggest

legend = a story handed down from the past

We have a Language Arts test on Monday, September 24, and a Math Test on Friday, September 28. If you read the information in the colored boxes at the top of the pages, this will help you on your tests.

I am sending home the Field Trip Permission Form for our October 18, 2012 trip to Main Stay Farm on Monday. Please look for it in your child's Monday papers.

Mrs. McConnell

We won donuts from the athletic department for the greatest amount of attendees to the Lady Patriots volleyball game. Our morning started off with Mr. Peterson (VBA athletic director) saying the pledges with us. While we enjoyed juice and donuts, Mr. Peterson explained the benefits of being involved in sports. We thank you, Mr. Peterson, for beginning our Friday on such a sweet note.

History Project

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

Everyone brought in an amazing project on the Indian housing and transportation. We took our projects upstairs to the big chapel room where Mr. Ticzkus was our first visitor. The second through sixth grade students all came to visit us as we explained our various Indian abodes and transportation devices.We showed them child size along with model size teepees. We showed Indian lodges, a couple of hogan dwellings, and lodges made with earth and wood. We did not have cliff or pueblo dwellings to display. We had some canoes. We really needed a picture of a bullboat to have some of them floating around the room. The rest of the elementary was very pleased to be able to see these excellent projects. Thank you for all your efforts in helping your child. Big smiles were seen everywhere.

Dear Parents and Students,

from:Catuto, Patti

to:All Students

Things are going great in history class.  The students have all done a good job on their current events.  Stay on the lookout for good articles - we will have current event reports on a regular basis.

Here's what's coming up for the next couple of weeks.

7th & 8th World History - We just finished chapter 5 and we will begin chapter 6.  Our next test will be on Friday, September 21, over chapters 4-6.

Geography - We are working our way through chapter 3 and we should be ready for a test over chapter 3 on Thursday, September 20.

American Government - We are studying chapter 5 - the Constitution.  There will be a test over chapters 4&5 on Friday, September 21.

Speech Class - We are loving speech class!  We just finished our impromptu speeches, and we will begin job interviews tomorrow.  Next week the students will begin personal testimonies.

The students are great!  I love teaching each and everyone of them.  I have decided to wait until the end of October before we take our field trip to the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit.  This will get us through the first grading period.  More details to follow soon.

Feel free to call or email me with any questions.  I want us to work together to make each student successful!

Have a great day!

Mrs. Catuto

Papers to be Sent Home

from:McConnell, Marcia

I did not get the papers to the students for the week. I had them ready, I did not get them passed out. Please forgive me. I will have them on their desks in the morning ready to go home tomorrow.

Tonight's homework is to copy spelling words three times, yet most finished them in class.

This class worked hard to finish everything in class. Thank you students for your extra efforts during Revival Week.

Revival Meetings

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

Tonight, Tuesday, and Wednesday night are revival meetings at 7:00pm at Victory Baptist Church. We meet in the Sanctuary. We would enjoy having you come even if you go to another church. We have a special speaker for these meetings, Mr Strunk. He is an annimated, inspirational speaker. Therefore, I am doing my best to keep homework to a minimum or none at all.

We will have our spelling test on Friday. I am working on getting the children to write their spelling words three times in class.

Weekend

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

We had a great week with many tests, along with some rewards for perfect papers.

We took a timed multiplication table paper today. Your child needed to complete from the top to the bottom, only by rows within an allotted time. Today they were granted 5 minutes. I hope to get them down to three minutes by the end of the year. Each row earned an M&M candy. This system will cement relationships of numbers. I also use fact families in their math spirals to relate numbers, making math connect into sense. The Math Times Table will come home Monday. I plan on giving this each Friday.

List 4 words for next week are: gigantic, pier, cousin, enemy, orange, fourth, surprise, stomach, minister, cyclone, Massachusetts (MA), grieve, janitor, tithe, hyphen, aspirin, accompany, ceiling, baptize, Christian, petal, audience, really

and the vocabulary words are:

scholar = a student; a person of much learning

pamphlet = a booklet

ancestor = a relative of long ago

commandment = an order

honesty = truthfulness

Your child has been assigned to read chapter 2 in Song of the Brook. A quiz grade will be taken on this chapter on Monday.

I have made a revised test calendar which I hope to distribute to the children Monday.

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..."

HIstory Indians

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

Your students thought of a great assignment. We were discussing Native Americans, their early dwellings and transportation. I would like for the class to each make a house or a transportation devise used by the Native Americans. Various dwellings of the first Americans are pictured on page 24 and 25 in their history book. Canoes are pictured  and bullboats are discussed on page 26. We discussed how it could be made with popsicle sticks and cloth, or other things.

Parents, there are VBA jacket and polos available in the adult sizes. If you would like one, the order form needs to be turned in by Friday.

For Friday

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

Tomorrow, we need to have your order form for the spirit wear t-shirts and sweatshirts. If you have not sent this in to the office through electronic means, please make sure it is in your fourth graders backpack tomorrow. I would like all my students to wear a VBA shirt for the field trips. The money needed for this will be put through your FACTS account. Thank you for looking into this.

Please note that tomorrow is the last Friday of the month, which allows your elementary child to wear blue jeans and a VBA spirit shirt. For those of you who are new to my class, your child may still wear the blue jeans, but you need to wear the school uniform polo shirt.

103% Spelling Test: Hurray for Ashlyn Fields! She is my first student to receive 100% or better on her spelling test on a Thursday. She will be receiving her reward tomorrow.

Last week I enjoyed giving out free uniform passes to Meaghan Neimeyer, McKayla Cousins, and Eric Lawrence for 100% spelling tests. Thank you for all your efforts.

This is a great bunch of fourth graders. Thank you for sharing them with me.

If you have the ability to go with us, please let me know so I can notify Mainstay Farm. They keep an accurate count for reservations.

Spelling Tips

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

One parent asked: "Do the fourth graders need to know how to spell the definitions?" No. Definitions are definitions, spelling words are spelling words. Usually the definitions are on the Friday test sheet which students need to match to the vocabulary words. If the definitions need to be written, I can read most writings, as long as they are close.

Another question about spelling was: "What if my child gets a higher grade on the Thursday spelling test, does the Thursday test count?" No. I am not grading the Thursday test, the students are doing the grading. If a child believes he/she has received 100%, that test is brought to me. I then check it. If I see the 100% as well, then the child does not need to take the Friday test and will receive a reward.

I try to remind students to grade their friend's paper correctly on Thursday. They can help their friend learn their words by marking the incorrect words. Their friends would like to receive 100% on Friday to also receive a reward from me.

Please ask questions, they help me to help the other parents who may also need that information.

Friday

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

It was a blessed week with the fourth graders. They worked very hard. I do appreciate each one of you as you help your child become responsible in turning in assignments and filling out items like their homework sheets. This blog is to assist parents. If I can add something which will help you, please let me know.

Tonight's homework is to begin looking at Spelling List 2. Your child does not need to turn in anything in Spelling on Monday. I also assigned Language Arts page 12 Think B. This assignment should be written in the Language Arts spiral and turned in Monday morning. These assignments are on the board and should be written in your child's Character Binder on the Homework Sheet even if your child has extra time to complete it in class.

This is an amazing year already.

I hope you have a great weekend.

Mrs. McConnell

Wednesday

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

I continue to thank you for allowing me to be a tool in your child's life. This class is amazing with their desire to learn.

Our highlight today was during science catching grasshoppers, putting them in a clear plastic bottle to see where were the various parts of the body (head, thorax, abdomen). We wanted to put one under the microscope, but the grasshopper refused to go.

Please remember the lunch menus are due Friday morning. Your child may bring the lunch menu to the classroom, or you may get it to the office.

Monday

from:McConnell, Marcia

to:All Students

Your child should be bringing home the Character Binder every day. Inside this binder you should find the Honorable Character and Defining Character chart. I have been giving out Honorable Character numbers because this class is an amazing class. They are becoming accustomed to the details which make the class run smoothly.

Every Monday, we send home the previous week's work. Your child also has papers which need to stay here in their spirals: vocabulary, and other pieces upon which we continue to build. Please find the folder with the weekly papers in your child's backpack. On one side I have marked, "Stay home." These paper are not needed back in the classroom. The other side I have marked, "Bring back." Please send these papers back for your child's portfolio which I will give you at the end of the year. There is also a small slip for you to sign. Please sign and date this slip and send it back inside the folder with the reading test I sent for you to look at and return.

I am looking for a room mom. If you are interested in providing leadership with other parents for our class, please email, text, or call me: mmcconnell@vbainfo.com or 828.279.01498. Thank you.

In Christ,

Mrs. McConnell
