Notes on Grades (and No School on Monday - Memorial Day)

from:Roselli Jr, Anthony

to:ELA - 2 - English Language (Mr. Roselli), Skills - 2

On Monday we honor Memorial Day across the country, as we remember those who died in our country's battles and wars. There is no school on Monday (and I will not post any new assignments until Tuesday). Please use this time to catch up on any missed assignments you may have. Check Thinkwave for your grades. For our class, a passing grade is the completion of all the assignments we have done during the quarter. The last day of the school year is June 5th. We will have online classes until the last day of school. As you may know, Final Exams for all your classes have been canceled but teachers may assign you projects. Grades for the fourth quarter have been adjusted.
A ---> 100.00%
A- ---> 92.25%
B+ ---> 89.25%
B ---> 86.00%
F ---> 48.75%
Pass ---> Will not count in the Sem2 average
A PASS grade is for students whose grade this quarter has fallen below their average score. During this time, we recognize that your academic achievement may not have been at its best so we don't want to penalize students who normally do good work but because of external circumstances outside of their control have seen their grades slipped. This could be due to stress related at home, change in one's home life, medical issues, and other conditions made worse by the COVID-19 crisis. It is still possible to fail the semester if a student simply does not turn in any assignments, or goes "dark" and we have no way of contacting you, and so on. It looks likes to me, all of you in English 10 are passing the course. So there is no need to worry. Please keep up your steady work and reach out if you need help with anything. We are here to help if you need it. Also, please let me know if you have any questions about grades this quarter, or in general.

Garden School Update - Message from Dr. Richard Marotta, Headmaster

from:Administrator

to:All Students, All Teachers

Dear Garden School Families,

I hope that you are continuing to do well during this health crisis. From what I have heard from many of you, you have managed to adjust to the new reality of our lives and have found ways to conduct business from home. From my own experience, I have been teaching my classes from our dining room and doing conference calls and video conferences to conduct the business of the school. It is certainly a very different way to teach and run a school, but for now, this is what we are all doing.

Report cards will be completed this week and sent to families as electronic copies. Our goal is to maintain the same quarterly schedule so that we can keep our educational plan on track. If you have questions about your child’s report card, the best way to communicate with teachers or administrators is through email. As you know, all staff have emails that consists of first initial, last name and then @garden school.org. ( rmarotta@gardenschool.org).

Spring break is approaching and will begin on Monday, April 6. Our intention is to observe this spring break as we normally would, which will give teachers time to recalibrate the distance learning and make any adjustments necessary to facilitate the delivery of class work to our students. Teachers may assign some readings or projects during this break. Since we don’t have an exact date when face to face learning may resume, we want to be sure that our distance learning process continually evolves and is as effective as possible.

Also as a result of the health care crisis, trips are either being postponed or cancelled. Obviously the spring break trip to Nantucket will not take place as scheduled. We are maintaining our relationship with the hotels in Nantucket so that we can keep our options open with them as the spring unfolds. The history trip to Boston for the 5th and 6th grades is also on hold and will not take place as scheduled.

From the information we are receiving from the City, State and Federal governments, it seems as though our scheduled date for resuming face to face education is also on hold. We will continue to engage in distance learning until we are given clearance by the State to resume in person learning. I will keep you informed of any developments in this area.

Thank you to all for your support. Everyday I read the email exchanges between parents and teachers and between teachers and teachers, and I must say that I am so pleased by the work and the cooperation that every member of our community is doing to provide quality distance learning for our children.

Be well and stay safe,

Richard Marotta, Ph.D.

from:Administrator

to:All Students, All Teachers

Dear Garden School Families, Friends, and Trustees,

Herein lies the "Winter Break" edition of the Garden School Newsletter.
This week we have put together a special collage of pictures and stories that hopefully reflect what we have been doing in our classrooms together this Winter, from Pasta Night to Digital Escape Rooms, a volunteer trip to the Salvation Army, and other goings-on around the school and community.

Also, keep in mind the following important upcoming dates and events:

Dates to Remember:

  • Winter Break - December 23rd to January 5th. Classes resume on Monday, January 6th.
  • Midterm-Exams for Upper School Student (7-12) - January 8, 9, and 10 (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday). See the Schedule online.
  • January 17, 2019 - Bully the Bully Performance @ 7:00 PM
  • January 20, Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday (no school)

Best Regards,

Dr. Richard Marotta, Ph.D.
