The Executive Departments

TimeDec. 02, 2012

from:Bidell, Barbara

to:Am. Government

We are continuing our unit on the Executive Branch of American Government. Last week, students presented their research on the various agencies that fall under the jurisdiction of the executive powers. This week, students will be taking on the persona of a cabinet member; students will be writing in the first person as the secretary of a department or the attorney general. They will be presenting information on the secretary himself or herself as well as the entire department. For further clarification, I will be sending out the rubric via e-mail. This is part of the overall unit on the Executive Branch of Government. At the end of the unit, students will be taking a unit assessment on what they have learned.

For homework this week,  students will be researching the Department of Commerce. This is one of the departments that will not be assigned (there are only 13 students in American Government and 15 departments). Students will answer the following questions:

When was the Department of Commerce established? What were the circumstances surrouding its inception (i.e. why was it formed)? What are three of the department's duties? Who is serving as the acting Secretary of Commerce?

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the assignment, the unit, or anything else, please feel free to drop me a line.
