Wednesday Class

from:Smith, Peach

to:Anatomy and Physiology: 12

Dear A&P Class - greetings!

A few reminders for Wednesday's class:

  1. Please use this class period to work on your analysis sheets and questions.
  2. You should be able to figure out these questions and the labeling graphs on your own! The questions include information covered in class since January, and everything else can be found on the worksheet you received to work through the dissection. You may look this sheet up online if you do not have a copy - it was emailed, and posted on ThinkWave both under assignments and under messages. You can use the anatomy coloring book as well if you need to. Some questions will simply require that you paid attention during class time this year...
  3. Whitman College has a good virtual link to fetal pig dissections, and you can use this for questions both in class tomorrow and at home if you need to. https://www.whitman.edu/academics/departments-and-programs/biology/virtual-pig
  4. Remember that this packet counts as your final - so please take care with your replies. Striving for excellence is a habit of character you should always be continuing to develop. :-)

If you have questions, I will be there Thursday and Friday and will answer any questions you have; you can also email me with concerns.

For those that are absent - Dante and James - you can work through the packet on your own and hand it in when you return to school. The virtual link above should help you. If you still need help, please see me on a Monday or Friday ASAP. You can also email me.

God bless you all!  I leave you with St. Thomas Aquinas' beautiful prayer for exams:

“God of Wisdom, I thank you for the knowledge gained and the learning experiences of the semester. I come to you this day and ask you to illuminate my mind and heart. Let your Spirit be with me as I prepare for exams, guiding my studies, and giving me insight so that I can perform to the best of my ability. Please grant me the strength to handle the pressure during these final days of the semester, the confidence to feel secure in my knowledge, and the ability to keep an appropriate perspective through it all. Help me to keep in mind what is truly important, even as I focus my time and energy on these tests in the immediate future. Finally, may I sense your peace in knowing that I applied myself to the challenges of this day.”

See you Thursday!

Reproductive System

from:Smith, Peach

to:Anatomy and Physiology: 12

Everyone,

When you have finished your test on Wednesday, read the attached materials and answer the following questions on paper.

There are three articles on the attached paper. Two of them are linked here as well:

https://aleteia.org/2017/06/06/teaching-your-teen-to-chart-her-cycle-could-literally-save-her-life/?fbclid=IwAR38HRrViO52dwasT-0s2KQ22jmoEaiXKAgEgOFEc0Rd6jDTacmV6j-15HY

http://www.catholiccincinnati.org/54630/nfp-is-for-real-men/

Respond True or False to these questions, as well as a brief comment - one or two sentences:

1. NFP is only for married couples.

2. NFP is based on guesswork: it's what people used before modern science developed contraception.

3. NFP can be used only by women with regular cycles.

4. NFP is too complicated to be used by most people.

5. NFP is not a reliable method of family planning.

6. There is no difference between NFP and contraception.

7. NFP does not allow for sexual spontaneity.

8. The Catholic Church wants people to have as many babies as possible.

9. The Catholic Church does not want married couples to have sex just for pleasure.

10. NFP is for women to deal with, it isn't really anything men need to worry about.

Bring your answers to class on Thursday!

Pulmonology

from:Smith, Peach

to:Anatomy and Physiology: 12

Hello,

Maria said that she could not find the Pulmonology assignment on Thinkwave. I checked and it is most definitely there, so I have no idea why some of you can't see it. I will post it again here (see below), and send it to as many emails as possible.

Let me know if you have questions!

The Respiratory System Quiz

Your respiratory system quiz will be a take-home quiz. You should work on it this week, and then hand in your completed packet on Monday at the start of class. Following are the requirements:

1. Using your anatomy coloring pages as a guide, draw your own respiratory system and label it.  pp 251, 253, 263 and p 265 are the most important pages for this. This is worth 50% of the grade, provided it includes every section that we have covered in class as a minimum.

2. Write (typed is preferred, but if you write by hand, it must be neat) a one-page summary of what the respiratory system is and how it works. Included must be an explanation of the zones and what they contain. You should also explain how the gas transfer works. This is worth the other 50% of the grade.
Of 100 pts:
a. 80 content
b. 10 grammar & punctuation
c. 10 clarity and neatness

God bless!

Advanced Materials

from:Smith, Peach

to:Anatomy and Physiology: 12

To all A&P students who are seriously considering medicine as a career, the articles and journal articles below may be of interest to you. They are all related to the digestive system we just covered. If, reading through them, you are hopelessly lost, feel free to ask me for terms and definitions, but hopefully, you can at least understand the general idea being covered, and get used to the terminology and type of langaue used in this field.

About appendicitis:

This quote stood out: "The modern physician should be humbled by the fact that, despite diagnostic and therapeutic advances (computed tomography [CT], ultrasonography, and laparoscopy), the misdiagnosis rate of the most common surgical emergency, acute appendicitis, has changed little over time."

Nutrition packet

from:Smith, Peach

to:Anatomy and Physiology: 12

Everyone,

Here is the complete nutrition packet. Again - apologies you did not get all the pages!  I strongly suggest you save it for reference. You will need to know the macro and micro nutrient section for the quiz.

For those of you who are seriously considering pursuing medicine, you may want to look this up: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5641835/ This is an excellent article - it is not only informative, but it is good practice for the materials you will have to read in biology and in any pre-med program. This article is listed on the attached paper as well.

Overall - remember to honor the body God gave you in every way - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

God bless you and see you in class tomorrow!

Information and Photos

from:Smith, Peach

to:Chemistry: 11

Greetings!

This is Mrs. Smith, your chemistry teacher!

Now that the new class is underway, and I have access to ThinkWave, I will be posting more information and material here to support the materials you are covering during the week. Be sure to study hard, as not doing so could lead to unforseen consequences on quizzes that will be forthcoming - and these peremtory writs will descend without (much) warning...

But fear not, I am sure you are all most diligent and firm of purpose!

I have begun an album for labs, and you can access the photos on the link below.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/vGweiM6wbqxMqmoz8

On Friday I will go over the plans for the remainder of the semester, how grading will work, and other such minutiae.

Until then...

Remember this one for Friday's class:

Two chemists walk into a bar. One says, “I’ll have an ‎H2O.” The other says, “I’ll have an ‎H2O, too.”

The second chemist dies.

(H2O2 is the chemical formula for hydrogen peroxide, which you can’t drink at a bar without grievous consequence.)

My necessaries are embark'd: farewell and Godspeed. (Stolen from Hamlet)

Review Materials

from:Smith, Peach

to:Anatomy and Physiology: 12

Dear Class,

Someone asked whether the kahoot was the review - since we missed the class yesterday I was not able to go over it - but in general, if you review everything I posted, all the Kahoots, the handout, the packet you got on Wednesday and paid attention in class, you should be fine on the Quiz!

Attached it the complete PPt again if you would like to have that review as well.

I am confident you will all do well!

Hope this helps! I hope that you are all staying warm as well.

God bless you,

Mrs. Smith

Have a Heart Homework

from:Smith, Peach

to:Anatomy and Physiology: 12

The following videos will help you understand this topic far better. They are generally short. Watch them and take notes! If you watch them all before Thursday, that would be ideal...Friday is the absolute latest.

This first video is "How heavy is air" - WAIT! You exclaim. Air? Aren't we studying the heart? Yes, we are...this is a 3.18 minute long video explaining the pressure we live in. This will help clarify pressure, blood pressure and a lot more about the human body as we continue to study this topic. Plus, it is a really fun video!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDf00z8sMFw

The next videos range from 10 minutes long to 2 minutes short. All of them will help you learn more about this field, and visualize materials covered in the class.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9ZZ6tcxArI - the heart part one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLBMwcvOaEo - the heart part two
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFRkSB46bl8 - cardiac output

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHMmtqKgs50 - ignore the commentary, just watch the video. Exceptionally well done.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_PYnWVoUzM - what is a heart attack?

Drama Powerpoint. Study!

May 16, 2016

HW due tomorrow Tuesday 5/17

from:Kelly, Clare

to:Intro. Literature/Composition

The play attempts to capture the universal and timeless experiences of daily life. Think of the title…. This is OUR town too…. Not just Grover’s Corners in 1901. What

1. Character types
2. Character dynamics (relationships between friends/father/mother/significant other etc)
3. Emotional experiences at big life events (like a wedding)

Are timeless and universal? Meaning, which details seem to capture people, relationships and emotional experiences of ALL people at ANY period in time?

Think of a few examples of EACH and explain on loose-leaf to turn in tomorrow
