BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT!

All parents are cordially invited to attend the Back-to-School Night on Wednesday September 9th at 7pm.  Back-to-School Night is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet your child’s teachers and to learn about our curriculum and programs.

We will meet in the auditorium promptly at 7pm. Please arrive on time.

During the upcoming school year, our art program will adhere the following three major factors.

The students will be introduced to the technicality of various crafts in both traditional and non-traditional, modern media. We will explore how the personal concept of the work precedes the actual craftsmanship and how it is applied in order to express an individual theme.

Our second goal is the visual analysis of the work, both through discussions, assessments, self, and group critiques and reflections. We will learn a number of aesthetic systems of analysis with which to view the art work, such as: composition, line quality, color theory, design principles, technique, emotional impact, overall mood of the work, etc. The students will learn to really look within the work in detail and with sensitivity that they may not have been used to before.

Once these two areas have been dealt with we move beyond purely aesthetic questions; students are introduced to the critical analysis of the artwork, and learn to apply this analysis to their future work. They are introduced to the world of art through time. They learn to see the relation of the artwork to historical and theoretical contexts through a variety of discussions, slide and movie presentations, as well as class work.

In Art this week, the Caldecotts started getting ready for Valentine's Day by making a special project.  They also made a dog sled team and learned a little bit about the Iditarod race in Alaska.

to: Social Studies Michelins

The Michelins reviewed the Declaration of Independence, learned about the Bill of Rights, and briefly discussed the Constitution.  They finished the week by watching "This Is America Charlie Brown: The Birth of the Constitution."

to: Caldecotts Reading Group Merion

Even though it was a short week, we got a lot done.  In our small reading group, we began long i words.  The students have been learning two main rules to remember long vowel sounds.  The rules are cvce (silent e makes the vowel say its name) and "when two vowels go out walking, the first one does the talking."

As a large group, the students reviewed nouns and verbs, and learned about adjectives.  They even made an adjective monster.
