Dear Quran 5 Parents,

Assalamu Alaikum:

Today we listened to children recite Dua' Qanut and graded them for HW #12. You can see their grades in Think Wave by the end of this afternoon (inshallah). Students can still improve their grades by memorizing the dua' without any mistakes. They will have to ask the teachers in class to listen to them for regrading.

We also continued our discussion of the skit based on Surah Al-Baqarah (last 3 verses). Here is the final format of the skit:

Scene 1 - Lunch & Bullying: Fatima B and Alina are having lunch and getting to know each other as friends. Fatima B is new to the school and does not know anyone. Three Bullies (Abeeha, Faatima T and Maryam) show up and start harrasing Fatima B and Alina. Alina gets scared and leaves and Abeeha makes Fatima B cry but verbal bullying.

Scene 2 - Cousin Talk: Abeeha talks to her cousin Zaid about the school and how she made the new student cry. Zaid explains to her that Allah is always watching and will hold us responsible for any bad deeds. He also recites verse 284 and the meaning. Abeeha started to feel bad.

Scene 3 - Friend Talk: Fatima B and Alina are talking about lunch. Alina felt bad having abdondoned Fatima B and suggests that they talk to an adult. They go to their teacher Sarah and explains to her what happened. Ms. Sarah assured them she will talk to the bullies and put a stop to the bad behavior.

Scene 4 - Repenting: Three bullies are skipping ropes and talking. Faatima T and Maryam boasted how three of them scared Alina to leave and how Abeeha made Fatima B cry. Abeeha, having had the talk with her cousin, is feeling bad about her behavior and tells her friends that they should stop the bad behavior. She reminded them how Allah (SWT) is always watching and will hold each person accountable for their thoughts and actions.

Scene 5 - Teacher Talk & Apologizing: Ms Sarah finds the 3 bullies talking in the playground and talks to them about the bullying incident. She reprimending them on being so unwelcoming to a new student and tell them to stop such behavior or be ready for consequences. Abeeha explains to the teacher that they have already feeling bad and will apologize to Fatima B and to Alina. They also said they will repent to Allah (SWT) for their bad behavior. They then walk over to Alina and Fatima B who are having lunch and apologizes to them and asks for their friendship.

Here is the timeline for this skit:

  • March 27 - Email lines to the teacher (see email at the bottom)
  • March 31 - Practicing the lines (try to have them memorized)
  • April 7 - Final Rehearsal in the prayer hall. Lines must be memorized. If extra time needed, students will be asked to stay after school.
  • April 14 - Present the Skit in front of an audience & parents during the first period. Each student must have at least one parent to be present.

Please note that this schedule is very tight and students are expected to finish all their work as outlined above. All students will receive the same grade based on everyone's performance in the skit..

Here are the roles that students are assigned:

Bullies: Abeeha, Faatima T, Maryam

Dear Parents,

Today we reviewed salatul witr and prayer times (i.e., how to figure out praye times based on the position of the sun). Then we covered salatul janazah. I handed out a cheet sheet on how to pray janazah prayer and did a brief demonstration in the class. Finally, as a preparation for the upcoming month of Ramadan we talked about Islamic Calendar and how lunar calendar works based on the positions of earth and moon.

Homework for March 31st:

  • Quite a few students did not complete their homework from last week (memorize Dua Qunut). I gave them another week to memorize it. This is a dua they learned last year in the Qur'an class, but many of them forgot. We are refreshing their memory as part of the witr prayer subject we have recently covered.
  • Write down the names of months in Islamic Calendar, identify which month (in Islamic Calendar) we are in now, and learn how lunar months are calculated using the positions of the moon and earth.
