Dear Parents,

Today, we reviewed the previous lesson (Lesson 2: The Promise of Allah) and mostly finished Lesson 3 (Objectives of the Qur'an). Here are the main points students are expected to know from Lesson 3:

  • What is the main objective of Qur’an?
  • What's "sirat al-Mustakim" (straight path)? Remember our discussion in the class about going to our destination (Jannah) via shortest path.
  • When (what year), where and how were the first verses of Qur’an revealed to Prophet Muhammed? Which surah do those verses belong to?
  • What is the opening (first) surah of Qur’an called? What is the content (subject) of this surah?
  • Basic facts about Qur’an: how many surahs (chapters) are there in the Qur’an (ans: 114)?  How many pages (ans: 600)? How many Juzz (ans:30)?
  • Is Qur’an a story book? Why or why not?

We also went through the homework and students recited verse 194 from Surah Al-i Imran from memory with its meaning. If your child did not do his/er homework for this week he/she can still turn it in next week with some points deducted as late penalty.

Homework for Oct 8th: Read Lesson 3 and answer questions at the end of the lesson (Page 21).

Dear Parents,

Today, we reviewed our discussion of Lesson 1 (Attributes of Allah) and mostly covered Lesson 2 (The Promise of Allah). Here are the things students are expected to know from Lesson 1:

  • Islam has three legs: faith, ibadat, muamelat
  • 5 pillars of Islam and 6 articles of faith
  • Why do we need to know the attributes of Allah (swt)
  • Do we know how Allah (swt) looks like?
  • What's "Asma al Husna?"
  • Know and understand the meaning of the following 5 names of Allah (swt): Rab, arRahman, arRahim, alMalik, AlAdl

Please review these questions with your child and make sure he/she is comfortable with the answers.

Homework for Oct 31st: Today, we learned verse 194 of Surah Al-i Imran (3:194). It is a beautiful dua and worth memorizing along with its translation/meaning. Therefore, I've assigned it as a homework for this week: Memorize the verse in Arabic and its translation (attached to this update as an image, also available on page 16 of the textbook).

I've also asked students to turn-in first week's homework (Page 13) on a piece of paper instead of marking the answers on the book.

Homework pages - 23, 24

We also started a class project -I had kids make a picture of what they like to do outdoors and in class we will practice the dua to recite when we are ready to go outdoors. We will work on this the next couple of weeks.

For Salah, we will Insha allah start working on names of 5 Fard salah and number of Raka'at for each salah.

Dear Parents,

Assalamu Alaikum: Today I listened to the students recite the first 5 verses of Surah Al-Alaq for their homework. Most had the verses memorized without any serious mistakes. Many of them can benefit from practicing with proper pronunciation (with with parents or with a good reciter). A few students did not do their HW at all; these students need to catch up fast because a new HW will be assigned in every class now to finish memorizing the entire surah. They would not want to fall back!

I request parents to ask all your children to see their graded HW and provide any support that your children need.

I have attached HW #2 (memorizing verses 1-8 of Surah Al-Alaq) and it is due next week (Oct 1).

We also played a game to learn the identification and meaning of a couple of words from the surah and will continue to do that in future classes. We also recited the dua's and verses that are said while offering the daily prayers (salat).

Please encourage your children to also refresh any old surahs they memorized in previous grades. We have a chart in class to keep track of the progress of older surahs.

Lastly, there is an Open House next week (Oct 1) and all parents are invited to arrive at school by 11:45 and report to the prayer hall. There you will receive instructions and then attend abbreviated versions of the Quran and Islamic Studies classes from 12:00-12:30pm. You will be able to learn the objectives of the classes and get to meet both teachers (inshallah).

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions.

Best Regards,

Dear Parents,

Today, we covered Chapter 1 (Attributes of Allah). As part of the dicussion we talked about three legs of Islam: faith (iman), prayers (ibadat), and daily life (muamelat). We emphasized the importance of ibadat and muamelat to keep our faith alive and how treating others nicely can reflect on our faith.

We reviewed 5 pillars of Islam and 6 articles of faith (a few students don't remember the latter, so please practice these at home).

We went over a few of the names of Allah (swt), but could not finish the chapter. We'll continue next week.
