Dear Parents,

Today we reviewed lesson 3 (Objectives of the Qur'an) and finished lesson 4 (Compilation of the Qur'an). Here are the main points students are expected to know from Lesson 4:

  • When did our Prophet start receiving the verses (ans: 610)? When was the last time he received any verses (ans: two months before he passed away)?
  • How did he receive them (ans: via Angel Jibril)
  • How did he preserve the verses (ans: he memorized them, asked his sahaba to write it, and memorize it)
  • What is a "hafiz"? (ans: someone who memorizes the whole Qur'an)
  • When was Qur'an compiled for the first time? Why?
  • When was Qur'an reproduced as a book and distributed to other cities?

We also talked about five daily prayers, their names, and how many rak'ah is each. Students are expected to know them by heart.

Test 1: Our first test of the semester is coming up in two weeks (Oct 22nd). I'll hand out a study guide next week, but it will pretty much the compilation of the bullet points I send out every week as part of the weekly updates. Please make sure you go over those with your child.

Homework for Oct 15th: Read lesson 4 and answer the questions at the endof the lesson (page 25). Some students turned in the wrong homework today. Instead of Lesson 3, they did Lesson 2. I gave them an extra week to turn in the correct homework. Also, if your child missed the class today due to travel, please make sure they turn in both this week's and next week's homework next week without penalty.

Assalamu Alaikum: Today I listened to students recite verses 1-14 of Surah Al-Alaq for homework 3. Many needed a little bit help and only a couple got the perfect score (14). Test 1 (reciting complete Surah Al-Alaq) is on October 29, so there are two class periods still left to perfect the memorization. Please continue to encourage your children to keep up the good work!

Just a reminder that Surah Al-Alaq Presentation is on Nov 5. If your child will be absent that day, they can do the presentation on Oct 29. There are 3 outlines due for the presentation on Oct 15, Oct 22 and Oct 29 (please see the handout for more details). These are to encourage students to start working on the presentation ahead of time and not cram on the last day. Please remind your children to hand the the outlines in on due dates. There are no points for accuracy and completeness; they will receive full credit for just turning the outlines.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
